The Gift of an Interruption: An Unexpected Reset

Yesterday, the power went out. Apparently, a tree fell on a transformer and it blew. To make matters worse, we are in the midst of a heatwave—and it’s no secret that summer is definitely not my favorite season (and no, winter isn’t either!).

Kevin was outside washing the cars and I was piddling in the kitchen. The lack of power stopped my plans, so I sat on the front porch. As I watched Kevin diligently working, I found myself thinking once again about how incredibly blessed we are. I looked at our life and told him, “We are like a bunch of spoiled little rich kids.”

It’s true. We live with so much comfort and instant access to everything we could ever want or need. It’s a luxury that so many in this world—and even right here in our own communities—do without every single day. We get so used to convenience that we forget it’s a privilege.

Sitting there sweating on the porch took me right back to my childhood. We didn’t have air conditioning back then. We just had a couple of fans sitting in the windows, buzzing away, trying to circulate the heavy summer air through the house.
Times may have been tight financially and emotionally growing up, but looking back, we always had exactly what we needed. We never went hungry, and we always had a safe place to lay our heads.

Losing electricity for just a short period of time was a gentle, needed reset. It reminded me that just as God cares for the sparrows and the grass of the field, He cares infinitely more for His children.

We may not always get everything we want in this life, but when we pause long enough to look around, we realize we are always given exactly what we need.
