When the Coffee Gets Cold
This keeps going through my mind this morning. We wake with the intent of going about our day.
For me, I love the quiet time of the morning. Just Coffee and Jesus as I know many do.
Today was no different, my coffee always gets cold because I don’t live alone.
Today I am thankful for the pitter patter that comes down the hall and snuggles up close every morning.
Today I am thankful for my grown children.
Today I am thankful for the man I share my life with.
Today I am thankful for my sweet friends and neighbors.
Today I am thankful for the problems that will come about.
Today I am thankful that God allowed me to be with them all for another day.
I think back to when my son was in Afghanistan during war time.
I think back to when my daughter was having her first child and I couldn’t be there. It was during Covid and only one person was allowed to be there and obviously, that was the father.
I think back to the day that Kevin went down in the back yard.
I think back to the time of being a single parent, of when we lived in a shelter, not once, but twice.
I think back to my mom and the day all 3 of her children were involved in a car accident.
Today I am thankful for all of it. While it’s not easy to go through it, the climb out of the pit (some of my own making) is so worth the reward waiting at the top of the mountain.
Life can throw us curve balls.
A phone call, a knock on the door, and now days it could even be a text notification, and our world can change.
Our children will always be our children, no matter how old they get. As a mother, I can assure you, we never stop worrying. Then when they have children of their own, we add to it. It’s just how we are. Yes, I know the Bible tells us to cast all our anxieties on Him and that we shouldn’t worry. But God also gave us those emotions for a reason. If we didn’t have emotions, would we care about one another? Could we truly love as Christ calls us to?
I hadn’t really thought about that until now.
I am reminded that some days, the coffee just gets cold.
We have no control even though we think we do.
Only ONE has control. While some of the things that happen in life are of our own doing, that’s not so for all of it.
That doesn’t mean that God causes bad things to happen. We have to remember that we live in a sinful world and everything is fair game to Satan. He may not be able to read our thoughts, but he’s smart. All he has to do is pay attention and we’ll feed our own minds with doubt and insecurity. I know I’ve done it many, many times in life and will probably continue to do so until the day I leave this world.
But I also know that I can turn to God. I know Jesus always has His hand out to help me. It’s my choice whether or not I choose to take it. Quite honestly, sometimes I say “I’ve got this” and it typically doesn’t turn out so well. Can anyone else relate?
Why do we do that? Because we’re human. Because we’re living in a fallen world. Because we allow the distractions of this world to do just that, distract us.
Today I just want to slow down and be thankful for the many blessings I do have.
Even if my coffee gets cold, I still have it. And I do have the ability to warm it back up.
Reach out, look up, be still and know. He is always with us.
