Like most people, I’ve been through more than my fair share of seasons that felt overwhelming—those times when the sky turned so dark it was hard to remember the color of daylight, and the winds howled so loud they drowned out my own thoughts. If I am being completely honest, I still hate the storms. In the middle of the pain, walking through a trial is just heavy, soul-exhausting work. I don’t naturally want the struggle, or the weight, or the exhaustion. I just want the sunshine.
My first instinct is almost always to brace myself, fight against it, and try to find any path that leads quickly back to comfort.
But recently, I have learned that something miraculous happens when I finally stop fighting against the storm and simply lean in. When I surrender my own white-knuckle grit and replace it with a genuine desire to trust and walk in obedience, everything changes. The outer turbulence doesn’t always vanish; the rain may keep falling and the chaos might still surround me. But in the center of it all, a quiet, immovable strength takes root in my chest.
It is a resilience that doesn’t come from my own endurance, but from resting in a power vastly greater than my own.
And in that vulnerable place, I realize that I am being held. I find a peace that makes no logical sense, and I feel an unmistakable, tender love that meets me exactly at the edge of my exhaustion.
In the lowest, most desolate valley, His hand somehow feels closest, wrapping around me so securely that the fear begins to lose its grip.
Right now, it feels as though the winds have quieted just a bit—like I might be standing right in the eye of it all, holding my breath and waiting to see what the next hour brings.
Yet even in this lull, I find myself reflecting on the sweet, unexpected intimacy that comes only in the height of the storm. I know He is always with me, but when the gale is raging, all the worldly distractions simply dissolve. Life strips down to what truly matters, keeping my entire focus fixed entirely on Him—on His grace, His strength, and His ultimate will. There is a sacred closeness in that total reliance, a moment-by-moment dependence that I almost miss when the noise settles.
Here in the stillness between the gusts, the lesson remains. I am learning not to panic over what might be waiting on the other side of this pause, because I know the very same hand that carries me through the dark valley is the one holding me right now. He has never once shifted His grip. The storm has a way of washing away life’s clutter and noise, forcing me to notice the hand that has held me the entire time.
I may not know how the rest of this unfolds, and I certainly didn’t ask for the trial. But I am standing steady—discovering that even in the quiet, breathless center of it all, my roots are running deeper into the soil of faith than they ever could have grown in seasons of only easy sunshine.
If these words touched your heart today, please feel free to leave a comment, give it a like, or share it with someone who might need a reminder of His tenderness right now. I’d love to hear where you’re finding peace in your own season.
