Guarding My Heart Without Closing It

Sometimes I need an honest reminder of what it truly means to walk in the grace I’ve been given.

If I am being completely honest with myself, living out my faith in community hasn’t always been easy. I’ve caught myself—and seen how easily any of us can—holding a grudge or pointing a finger when things get hard. I know my Bible well and can offer helpful advice, but in my human weakness I can still forget to practice the very grace I preach.

The truth I have to remind myself of is that God loves all His children—including those who test my patience or cause me pain.

For many years, I’ve been guilty of letting the actions of others dictate my own life and peace. A person can only steal my joy if I permit them to, yet I’ve handed over that permission more times than I care to admit. I’ve been deeply hurt, often because I have a habit of letting my guard down too quickly and getting comfortable around people before I get to know their true character.

As I’ve grown, I’ve learned the hard way that not everyone who crosses my path is meant to be a close friend. Choosing my true friends with caution isn’t un-Christlike; it’s wise. Protecting my inner being doesn’t mean withholding love or prayer—it simply means recognizing where my boundaries lie.

Scripture never commands me to trust everyone who comes along mindlessly. God calls me to put my complete trust in Him, guard my heart, and treat others with grace.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
— Proverbs 4:23

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
— Proverbs 3:5-6

Jesus modeled this balance perfectly. He loved the crowds, He healed the hurting, and He prayed for those who persecuted Him. But He did not entrust His heart to everyone:

“Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people” (John 2:24).

Learning these lessons through trial hasn’t always been easy, and I won’t pretend it doesn’t still hurt at times or that I fully understand every valley. But today, there is a deep freedom and peace in my heart. Through it all, I’ve discovered that Jesus is the one true and faithful Friend who never lets me down.

I’ve learned there is a vital difference between walking in wise boundaries and shrinking back out of resentment. When I allow hurt to turn into a bitter retreat, I give the enemy room to celebrate. But when I guard my heart while continuing to love, I deny him that victory.

When I place my ultimate trust in the Lord rather than human expectations, I free myself from bitterness—loving others freely while leaving my heart safely anchored in Him.
