Two Ears One Mouth

Life rarely explodes all at once. More often, it just frays at the edges.

Lately, things have been so hectic in all aspects—filled with mini trials, everyday drama, and little friction points that tend to knock me off balance. We tend to measure our spiritual growth by how we weather the major storms: the huge life crises or the deep grief.

But if I’m honest, my daily patience and my walk with the Lord are much more frequently tested by the small battles. It’s those minor annoyances that end up teaching me some of life’s greatest lessons.

This season has been a profound lesson for me in
humility and discernment.

In the heat of a frustrating day, my human instinct is to react quickly. I want to explain, defend, or fix things in my own strength, using my one mouth over time.

Yet, there is a timeless, quiet wisdom in the simple physical design we’ve all been given: we have two ears and one mouth. If we would listen more and talk less, we would find life this side of heaven so much more peaceful.

Of course, it’s not perfect.

The adversary is always on the prowl, always pressing our buttons and whispering in our ear, trying to pull us into chaos. And sometimes, I have to admit, I make mistakes before I finally hear what the Holy Spirit is trying to say. I stumble, I speak too soon, and I have to backtrack. But His grace meets me even there, turning those missteps into gentle course corrections.

We are called to take every thought captive. And when we do—when we intercept those runaway reactions and quiet our rushed thoughts—that is when God speaks. He gives us the answers we’ve been searching for, cutting through the noise with a still, small voice.

Let he who has ears, let him hear.

Things that cross my mind:

What is one “mini trial” from my week that might be trying to teach me something?

Where do I need to pause, use my two ears, and quiet my thoughts to listen for the Holy Spirit today?

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for meeting us right in the middle of our busy days and our everyday friction. When the mini trials come, and the noise threatens to overwhelm us, quiet our hearts and help us to remember the wisdom of two ears and one mouth. Give us the grace to pause, to take our thoughts captive, and to truly listen for Your still, small voice guiding our steps. When we stumble and speak too soon, wrap us in Your patience and turn those missteps into gentle course corrections.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
