My Devotional on Grace, Trust, and the Tides of My Heart
Scripture for Reflection
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1
“If we are faithless, He remains faithful—for He cannot deny Himself.” — 2 Timothy 2:13
My Reflection
Some days, my heart is full, my mind is sharp, and God’s presence feels as real to me as the air in the room. In those moments, I simply can’t get enough of His Word.
And then come the other days.
The days when my mind wanders while I try to pray. The days when my appetite for reading feels quiet, or my heart feels strangely still. It used to be so easy for guilt to creep in—to ask myself, Did I do something wrong? Why can’t I stay focused? Where did that closeness go?
I realized it helps to think of it like a child going through a growth spurt.
When children are spurting, their appetite is insatiable because their bodies are rapidly expanding and building. But when the spurt pauses, their appetite slows down. Their bodies aren’t failing—they are simply resting, catching up, and letting that rapid growth settle into their bones.
My spiritual walk works the very same way. Those days when I am consumed with a hunger for God’s Word are my spiritual growth spurts. God is expanding my heart, giving me fresh insight, and drawing me close.
The quieter days aren’t a sign of spiritual laziness or pulling away. They are seasons of assimilation—times when my soul is resting, catching up, and taking the time to digest and live out what I just learned. I cannot live in a constant, high-speed spurt without burning out; my soul needs those quieter rhythms to let my roots sink deeper.
God’s presence doesn’t ebb and flow with my feelings or my focus. He holds onto me just as tightly in the steady quiet as He does in the surging growth.
A Thought to Remember
“Faith is the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods.”
— C.S. Lewis
My Prayer
Lord,
Thank You for how You design me to grow—in seasons of rapid spurts and seasons of quiet rest. Forgive me for letting guilt take root when my mind wanders or my appetite slows. Remind me that You are just as present when my soul is resting as You are when my heart is overflowing. Help me to ground my relationship with You not in my changing feelings, but in Your unshakable character and Your daily faithfulness.
In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
My Step Forward
- In Action: When I feel a quiet season set in, I won’t force a high-energy feeling or carry guilt. I will take a deep breath, trust that my soul is simply digesting His grace, and whisper, “Lord, thank You for letting me rest in You today.”
