“So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one…”
— 1 Corinthians 3:7–8
It is a quiet, subtle thing, how easily the human heart can build invisible fences in the middle of a holy field.
We step into spaces meant for grace, and without realizing it, we begin to keep a quiet ledger. We watch the row next to ours. We weigh the time spent, notice the turned heads, count the hours poured over open pages, and measure whose burden looks heavier from afar. It happens almost imperceptibly—this gentle shifting of our eyes from the harvest to each other, turning a shared calling into an unspoken race.
When we look sideways, grace begins to feel like a limited resource, as though someone else’s effort somehow diminishes our own.
But the Kingdom of God does not run on a scorecard.
One person is no better than another. We are, all of us, children adopted by the same Eternal Father—co-heirs through the very same blood shed two thousand years ago, a grace as fresh and living today as the morning light. There is no solitary crown reserved for the one who labored longer, nor a special status for carrying a heavier load. The preparation, the quiet prayers, the hours spent tending to the hearts placed in our care—none of it was ever meant to be a tape measure. It is simply work done under the same warm sun.
When we drop the heavy ledgers in the dust, the competition evaporates.
In the grand scope of eternity, we are not rivals working on opposite sides of a divide. We are brothers and sisters tilling the same earth, bound for the same home. For when we finally look up from our own small rows and gather at the finish line, we remember the truth that heals every divide: at the foot of the cross, the ground is completely level.
When the final evening shadows fall, and all our earthly tools are laid aside, we will all step through the very same door and stand in that very same level light—gathered together as one family by the blood that bought us.
Prayer
Lord, lift our eyes above the small fences we build. Help us drop the desire to measure, compare, or prove our place in Your house. Remind us that at the foot of Your cross, we all stand on level ground—equally loved, equally forgiven, and washed in the same timeless grace. Give us hearts to celebrate our fellow workers, knowing that we are all walking under the same horizon, traveling home to You together.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
