The Scenic Route Home: Finding Grace in the Self-Checkout

THE SCENIC ROUTE HOME: Finding Grace in the Self-Checkout

Mondays arrive with their own built-in momentum. The task list is known, the schedule anticipated, and the rhythm set before the day even breaks. But anticipation doesn’t always shield us from friction.

Today was one of those running-around Mondays. After stopping by my sister’s house, I pulled into the nearby Neighborhood Market to stock up. It had been a while since our last real grocery trip, so it didn’t take long to fill the buggy. But when I wheeled up to the front, the traditional registers were closed. No checkers—just the glowing screens of self-checkout.

If you’ve ever tried to navigate a full cart through a space built for three items and a handbasket, you know the dance. Scanning, bagging, rearranging, fighting for counter space—by the time the receipt printed, my spirit felt compressed, heavy with a sharp, unnecessary irritation.

Then, I walked through the sliding glass doors and looked up at the sky.

A SOFT CONVICTION

Right there in the parking lot, the atmosphere shifted. The Lord spoke so clearly to my heart:

“I have blessed you abundantly. You had the funds in your account to buy these groceries. You had the physical strength to scan and pack them yourself. And you have a household full of love to take them home to.”

In an instant, I recognized exactly what He was telling me. The conviction was immediate, but my feelings needed a moment to catch up. I was still carrying that lingering edge of frustration, standing in the tension between knowing I was blessed and still feeling the weight of the moment. God, in His tenderness, didn’t demand an instant emotional shift. Instead, He guided the rest of my way home.

THE GENTLE DE-ESCALATION

Still processing that quiet lesson and talking with Him, I missed my turn.

Instead of my usual straight path, I ended up taking the long way, winding through the historical district up on Missionary Ridge. What felt like a wrong turn became a sacred sanctuary. The quiet road, the trees, and the forced slowdown began to soften the sharp edges of my morning.

Wanting something different, I asked for traditional gospel music, but as the playlist drifted into soft, peaceful instrumentals, I knew it wasn’t an accident. The Lord knows exactly what settles my spirit. He used those quiet, beautiful notes floating through the car to gently wash away the rest of my tension.

And then came CeCe Winans singing “Worthy of It All.” That song has been popping up in my life quite a bit lately, but as her voice filled the car along the Ridge, it brought everything full circle.

WORTHY OF IT ALL

Sometimes God gives us a swift word of conviction outside a grocery store, but He knows human hearts take time to settle. He didn’t just correct my perspective; He ushered me through a scenic detour and wrapped the drive in peaceful music to bring my spirit back to rest.

By the time I pulled into the driveway, the irritation was completely gone, replaced by a quiet awe.

Mondays may be busy, and our human patience may run thin, but His patience with us never expires. He is worthy of our worship in the crowded aisles, on the winding roads, and in every full moment in between.

A QUIET THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

“He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” — Psalm 23:2–3

Lord, thank You for Your gentle patience with me. Thank You not only for pointing out my blessings when I get cranky, but for loving me enough to lead me down peaceful roads until my spirit catches up with my heart. Reminding me that even my detours are in Your hands.
