On this day, she experienced fresh air, the love of family, laughter, worship, and good music at JFest. The dirt on her cheek was evidence of a day well spent in God’s creation, soaking up the sunshine and making memories.
What she doesn’t fully understand yet is that something even greater is taking place—that she already has a hunger for God.
She will often pull out her little Bible, open its pages, and sometimes even fall asleep looking at it. This time, after a full day of fun, she simply fell asleep right where she drifted off. One shoe missing. Dirt still on her cheek. Toys scattered around her. An open Bible lying before her.
To most people, it may look like an exhausted little girl after a long day.
To me, it looks like something beautiful.
She may not yet understand the words she sees, but the God who inspired those words knows her completely.
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee…” — Jeremiah 1:5
The desire she has toward Him is not an accident. Scripture tells us:
“We love him, because he first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19
Long before she ever reached for God, God was reaching for her.
Jesus Himself welcomed little children, saying:
“Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” — Luke 18:16
Every time she opens that Bible, every prayer whispered over her, every song about Jesus she hears, and every example of faith she witnesses is planting seeds that God can grow in His perfect timing.
“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6
The world may see a little girl with dirt on her cheek, one shoe missing, asleep in the middle of a messy room after a fun-filled day. But I see something more. I see a young heart already being drawn by the Lord.
Not because she has it all figured out.
Not because she understands every Bible story.
Not because she’s old enough to explain her faith—but because God is already walking beside her.
For her grandmother understands that the greatest inheritance she can leave is not money, possessions, or accomplishments—it is introducing her grandchildren to Jesus Christ.
“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.” — 3 John 1:4
So the day may have been about fresh air, family, music, and sunshine. But perhaps without even realizing it, it was also about something eternal—a little girl taking small steps toward a Savior who has been pursuing her all along.
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children…” — Deuteronomy 6:6-7
May she always know that the Jesus she is learning about today is the same Jesus who has loved her from the very beginning.
And may that little Bible beside her become more than a book she falls asleep looking at. May it become the foundation upon which she builds her life.
