I stepped outside today in the middle of my normal routine, just going about the chores and rhythm of the day. But out of habit, I looked up. There in the middle of a bright, clear blue sky hung the moonโpale, quiet, and half-lit against the daylight.
Standing there on the porch, a sudden, deep peace settled over me. In the quiet of the afternoon, looking up into that vast, unending blue and seeing the moon resting there, the noise of the day just fell away. My heart felt still for the first time in a long while.
My neighbor happened to walk out right as I was raising my phone to capture it. He looked over and asked what I was taking a picture of.
Saying those words out loud felt good. There is such a sweet comfort in pausing during an ordinary moment, breathing in that stillness, and remembering to look for God in the everyday.
As I stared at that photograph later, I thought about scale. Floating in that vast ocean of blue, the moon looks so small, almost delicate. You could easily glance right past it if you weren’t paying attention. Yet, in reality, it is a massive, enduring giantโan anchored force hanging in the heavens, quietly pulling the tides of the earth without making a sound.
As Psalm 19:1 reminds us, In that midday moon, I saw a quiet reflection of how He works in our lives.
He is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. He is hugeโgreater and higher than anything we can measure or wrap our minds around. He fills the entire universe, holding galaxies and every detail of our lives in His hands. Yet so often, in the middle of our loud, busy daylight hours, He presents Himself in quiet, gentle ways.
The world might look up at a daytime sky and see nothing unusual. People might look at our simple daily routinesโfolding laundry, baking bread, standing on the porchโand see only the ordinary. But when we train our eyes to look closer, we realize the Almighty is right there in the middle of it all.
Constant.
Unshakable.
Present even when the sun is bright, and the world is distracted.
When the Lord passed by Elijah on the mountain, He was not in the great wind, the earthquake, or the fire. As 1 Kings 19:12 tells us, after the fire came ๐ช๐ฏ ๐ข ๐จ๐ฆ๐ฏ๐ต๐ญ๐ฆ ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ช๐ด๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณโa still, small voice.
He doesn’t have to shout or put on a grand display to prove how big He is. In the quiet space of an ordinary day, His gentle whisper reminds us that no matter how small we feel, or how vast the sky above us seems, Heโs got the whole thing held securely in His hands.
