The Vastness Above and the Peace Within
The porch was warm beneath my feet, holding the midday heat, while the air carried a sharp, crisp hint of seasonal change. I stepped outside with my mug, wrapped my hands around the warm ceramic, and did what I’ve caught myself doing more and more lately: I looked up.
For the last few days, the sky has seemed impossibly vast. Under the bright weight of the noon sun, the horizon stretches out wider, and the clouds ride higher than usual, drifting in slow, quiet majesty against a brilliant blue ceiling. There is an immediate hush that comes over the mind when you take that in. In the middle of a busy day, it forces a perspective you can’t manufacture. You realize just how small the noise of daily life is, and how immeasurably big the Maker of it all truly is.
Life has a way of throwing sudden storms our way—winds that test the roof overhead and rains that beat against the glass.
Standing there in the full light of day, I thought about how He doesn’t cause those storms. He isn’t the author of the chaos and the heavy trials we sometimes find ourselves walking through. But as I watched a lone hawk riding the upper currents far above the turbulence, a deep peace settled in. He doesn’t waste them either.
Every hard thing, every season of waiting or wrestling with things beyond our control—it all passes through His hands first.
He sees it all.
His wisdom surpasses any small, narrow understanding I try to cling to when I’m feeling overwhelmed.
“Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit,” came softly to mind (Psalm 147:5).
It’s a comforting anchor.
When the ground beneath us feels uncertain, His character doesn’t shift.
He wins every single time, and we are the beneficiaries. Not because we have it all figured out, but simply because we are invited to lean into faith, to practice a quiet obedience, and to rest in the reality that He’s got this.
It’s all His anyway.
He doesn’t owe us explanations, and He certainly doesn’t owe us perfection down here. Yet, looking out at the sheer beauty of the bright day, He blesses us beyond measure.
I took a slow sip of coffee, let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding, and whispered the only prayer that fit the moment: “Thy will be done.”
