“He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
— Psalm 91:4
The house is still, wrapped in the gray, lingering dimness of an early morning before dawn. Outside, the sky hangs heavy with the promise of a storm rolling in over the weekend, but inside, the air is quiet and steady.
At the dining table, the centerpiece rests on its white wooden tray. Beside a candle and the familiar Footprints book sits a small, faux green plant, nestled quietly beneath a tall wooden vase. Slender, dried stems of the silver dollar plant rest in that vase. I’ve tried to nudge them to the right to keep things straight and balanced, but they inevitably curve back to the left. Their pearlescent, translucent pods fan out like a delicate canopy, leaning directly over the greenery below as if to shelter it.
The little plant underneath doesn’t grow. It doesn’t blossom or stretch upward to meet the light—it is simply there, artificial, fixed, and plain. Yet the silver stems don’t wait for it to prove its worth. They lean over it all the same, spreading their paper-thin wings to shield it.
It is a quiet, beautiful reminder of the One who walks beside us.
Jesus doesn’t wait for us to be fully grown, perfectly put together, or vibrant with life before He draws near. He doesn’t require us to stand tall under our own power when the gray clouds gather on the horizon. Instead, His nature is simply to bend low. He reaches over our daily lives—our quiet routines, our fragile moments, our plain days—and spreads His protection over us like a refuge in the storm.
Even when we feel stuck or helpless, unable to change our circumstances as the weather turns outside, His presence remains constant. He doesn’t ask us to hold up the world; He simply asks us to rest underneath the grace He has already extended.
As the first light of morning slowly breaks through the overcast sky, the table holds its lesson. The storm may come, the wind may rattle the windows, but the truth remains untouched: we live every moment sheltered beneath a constant, leaning grace, watching over what is small, keeping it safe, and walking alongside us through every quiet hour.
