“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”
— Proverbs 24:3–4
The house is quiet this morning, wrapped in that sacred, fleeting stillness that only belongs to the early hours of a Sunday. In the kitchen, the coffee maker drips its steady rhythm, filling the space with a rich, dark warmth. On the counter, the crockpot is already warm, meatballs simmering slowly in red sauce for lunch after church. It’s a simple routine, but it’s the quiet anchor to our week.
Everyone else is still asleep. Down the hall, my daughter Jes and her little girl, Odessa, are resting. Odessa stirs, a soft, dry cough breaking through the silence—she’s been sick these last few days, her boundless energy temporarily spent. Out in the new room we’ve been working to finish, my brother-in-law, Mike, is sleeping. After having a couple of strokes, this space gives him a quiet place to heal and rest when he stays on the weekends. And in our room, Kevin is still asleep—my partner through every project, every season, and every prayer prayed within these walls.
Soon enough, the soft pitter-patter of feet will come down the hallway, and the quiet will give way to the day. But right now, in these peaceful minutes before the house wakes up, this is my cherished time.
Standing here in the soft morning light, mug in hand, I can feel the deep, comforting weight of this home.
We are only the second family this house has ever known. Someone else laid the original foundation decades ago; another family watched the sunrise through these windows first. But over the years, Kevin and I have made it our own. We’ve poured our sweat into it—knocking down boundaries, rolling on fresh paint, and expanding the space so there’s always room for the people we love. Yet, underneath the fresh drywall, the wood, and the updated floors, the heart of the house remembers it all.
If these walls could talk, what a long, beautiful, noisy story they would tell.
They wouldn’t just speak of the peaceful mornings or the physical dust of renovation. They would tell you about the chaos. The glorious, messy, loud, unpredictable chaos of real life unfolding under one roof. They’ve heard the barking, the spilled drinks, the hurried mornings, and the overlapping voices of multiple generations all trying to be heard at once.
They’ve absorbed that vibrant chaos right alongside the quiet moments—the unfiltered laughter of crowded suppers, and the sharp, hot sting of arguments that eventually melted into quiet forgiveness. They’ve held the heavy weight of pain we thought we couldn’t carry, and the silent tears shed when the night felt too long.
Most of all, these walls have held our prayers.
They’ve listened to the desperate pleas whispered in the dark during hard seasons, and the quiet prayers of gratitude on mornings just like this.
They’ve watched Kevin and me build a life, held Jes as she grew into motherhood, wrapped their arms around little Odessa, and offered refuge to Mike when he needed rest.
Out in the new addition, the walls are still fresh, but they are already inheriting this life—sheltering Mike, giving him comfort, and preparing to hold their own share of the daily noise, laughter, and answered prayers.
Down the hall, a mattress shifts. A blanket rustles. The morning is gently moving forward, and the quiet is about to yield to the beautiful, chaotic joy of another Sunday. But for a few more minutes, the house holds its breath—a living, breathing testament to God’s grace in every little thing.
