The View from My Quiet Corner

I woke tired this morning, but I woke up. The morning air was still, that brief and precious window after the girls left for school and while Kevin was still fast asleep. On the kitchen counter, my to-do list waited silently, heavy with the demands of the week ahead. Resting after a busy weekend, I felt the pull of the coming days—tired or not, there is always the gift of another opportunity to live them.

Sitting in my small living room, I looked out from my quiet corner. To anyone passing by, this space might look simple, perhaps even cluttered with a collection of mismatched furniture. But through my eyes, I see something entirely different. I see warmth. I see love. I see a welcoming coziness built slowly over time.

The wooden rocker in the corner is our latest addition, rescued from collecting dust in a friend’s house to become a centerpiece in mine. Draped in a handmade crocheted blanket next to the quiet warmth of the fireplace, it holds a soft invitation to rest. I often wonder about the stories those wooden arms could tell from its years of existence, the quiet comfort it offered long before it came to rest on the patterned rug beneath my feet.

Just above the wall sign that reads ‘Family’, hangs a special Mother’s Day gift—a generated sketch created from a family photo that my youngest daughter gave me. It watches over this corner as a silent reminder of who we are.
To the right of the rocker stands the dark bookcase, holding a few books that may or may not have been read, old Bibles, and stacks of games whose boxes are lovingly worn from hours of play with the growing gift of a grandchild the Lord has blessed our home with.

My view reaches further into the heart of our home.
In the dining area, our small table stands ready for meals. When family gathers, space gets tight, overflowing organically to the kitchen bar, into the living room, or out onto the screened back porch depending on the weather.
Just beyond, the recliner waits for the weekends when Kevin’s brother comes to stay, and the worn couch beside it has hosted many a dear friend over the years, cradling us through deep, heartfelt conversations and belly laughter.

This small space holds so much life. Within these walls, we’ve made hard decisions, celebrated deep joys, and walked through both good times and hard times. Every piece here is an anchor for memory, holding the love of family, the warm hugs of friends, and above all, the quiet, daily grace of God.

Thank you so much for spending a few quiet moments with me in my corner today! Is there a special spot or piece of furniture in your home that holds sweet memories for you?
