Finding Grace in the Unplanned Pause

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Today, I did something I almost never do. After the girls left for the day, instead of stepping straight into the endless loop of tasks and mental checklists waiting for me, I went back to bed.

I’ve been exhausted lately. The kind of tired that doesn’t come from physical labor, but from the heavy, invisible weight of mental stress. I haven’t been sleeping well—staying up too late, waking up frequently through the night, and getting up far too early. Usually, if I try to lay back down, my mind immediately takes off running. I start mapping out the day, worrying through problems, and trying to fix things before my feet even touch the floor.

But today was different. I fell right back asleep and slept for almost two full hours.

I woke up shocked, but deeply thankful.

The stress hasn’t been about my own immediate home, but the ongoing friction that keeps swirling around. There’s drama I thought was finally put to rest, only to watch it rear its head again for reasons I can’t understand. I hand it over to God, and then suddenly I hear it’s out there all over again. On top of that, there are heavy family decisions resting on our shoulders right now. At this stage of life, you expect things to settle down. You hope for ease, quiet, and a little well-earned peace—yet it feels like the older we get, the more chaotic the world around us becomes.

Jesus never promised that this life would be easy. In fact, Scripture reminds us that as time moves on, trouble and noise will only increase. But today, God reminded me that He still knows how to give us rest right in the middle of it.

I didn’t solve a single problem in those two extra hours of sleep. The family decisions are still waiting, and the external drama didn’t magically vanish. But when I couldn’t quiet my own thoughts, God stepped in and hushed them for me. He proved that the world can spin on its axis for a little while without my supervision, and that leaving a burden in His hands means letting go of the need to manage it.

Today, I’m learning to stop fighting the tiredness and simply receive the grace of the pause.
