“Do you still live close to your roots, or have you built a life miles away?”
I came across that question recently. I knew it was asking about physical geography, but my heart immediately reframed it:
“Am I living close to my roots in Christ, or have I drifted miles away in the busyness of daily life?”
It’s easy to live in the motions of faith—to read the Word, go to church, and pray—yet still feel easily shaken.
Sitting up at 3:00 AM when I can’t sleep, my mind starts to fire off.
I catch myself reflecting on how easily I react out of impatience, get bothered by others’ actions, or hold onto offense. Then the familiar wave of guilt creeps in:
“If I’m truly rooted in Christ, why am I still letting this get to me? If He were standing right here, would I react this way?”
The truth I have to remind myself of is that being rooted in Christ doesn’t mean I stop being human. I am still a sinner living in a broken world, and I will make mistakes. But grace meets us in that exact gap.
I bought a WWJD bracelet as a physical touchpoint for my days. It isn’t a symbol of pressure to “try harder” or be perfect, but a gentle, visible reminder of a profound truth:
Christ isn’t just standing beside me—His Holy Spirit, my Advocate, is living within me.
When I looked up Colossians 2 about being rooted, the cross-reference margin in my Bible led me directly over to Ephesians 5:20:
“always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It was such a sweet nudge.
Being rooted and abounding in faith goes hand in hand with gratitude—even when it’s hard.
Giving thanks when I feel frustrated or humanly weak turns my focus away from my own flawed reactions and back onto the Advocate living inside me.
When I glance down at my wrist during a tense moment, I want it to be an invitation to pause, breathe, give thanks, and step out of my own reaction and into His peace.
My roots don’t depend on my ability to never sway in the storm; they depend on the unshakeable Soil I am planted in.
Scripture for Reflection
“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”
~ Colossians 2:6–7
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.”
~ John 14:26
A Personal Prayer
Lord, thank You that my foundation rests on Your grace, not my perfection. Forgive me when I let my surroundings or my own thoughts pull me off course. Thank You for giving me the Advocate to live inside me, guiding my steps and softening my heart.
When frustration creeps in today, remind me of Your abiding presence, give me a heart of thanksgiving, and keep my roots deep in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
