“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord… They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.”
— Jeremiah 17:7–8
Watering my potted plants the other day brought an unexpected spiritual picture to mind.
Sitting under the shelter of my porch, these plants are safe from the direct storm, yet entirely dependent on my attention. They didn’t choose their placement, nor can they dig their roots deep into the earth to find their own nourishment. In the intense summer heat, they dry out quickly. If I forget them, they wither. But when I faithfully water, prune, and re-pot them as needed, they thrive in full, vivid beauty.
It made me reflect on how much this mirrors our walk with God.
We, too, are completely dependent on our Master Gardener. We often find ourselves planted in seasons or circumstances where we feel limited, but even under His shelter, we cannot survive on yesterday’s grace. We grow and flourish only when we stay constantly connected to Him through His Word and prayer, letting Him refresh us with a fountain that never runs dry.
The heat waves and trials of life are inevitable, and on our own, we quickly dry up. But our survival this side of heaven isn’t about our own strength—it’s about the depth of the water we draw from. When we yield to the Gardener’s hand and let Him nourish and prune us, even the hottest season cannot steal our growth. We will bloom right where He has placed us.
