When Plans Change: A Lesson in Divine Provision

Our quiet cul-de-sac is usually just that—quiet. But yesterday, it was a whirlwind of activity from 7:00 a.m. until well past 10:00 p.m. Between the construction trucks, the neighbors’ cars, and our own driveway packed to capacity, our little dead-end street looked more like a busy metropolitan intersection.

It was a long day, but as I watched the crew working under the streetlights late into the night, I couldn’t help but think about how God works in mysterious—and sometimes very timely—ways.

Kevin had been leaning toward putting the project off for a few months, maybe even a year, because, from the ground, the roof still looked perfectly fine. On Sunday, he sent a text to the contractor to postpone our Monday meeting to sign the contract.

In Kevin’s mind, he had clearly communicated that we were hitting the pause button, so he was more than a little confused when, on Tuesday, a truck arrived and began unloading materials. We hadn’t received any notice they were coming.

Despite his initial confusion, I looked at him and said, “Maybe this is God’s way of telling us we need to get this done now, not later.”

The decision to move forward with the roof didn’t happen overnight. It was a true tug-of-war—a battle of wills between wanting to hold onto our resources and trusting that the time was right. It wasn’t necessarily a fear of spending the money, but rather a simple reluctance to let it go; we had that human desire to keep things as they were and wait for what we thought was a “better” time.

Kevin decided to roll with it, and work began a few days later. As the crew started ripping off the old shingles, we quickly realized how right that intuition was. What looked solid and well-maintained from the street was hiding a different story underneath. As they peeled back the layers, they found significant rot we never could have seen. It was so bad that one of the workers actually stepped right through a piece of the decking.

What was supposed to be a standard job turned into a major repair. The crew expected to be finished by 3:00 p.m., but they stayed until after 10:00 p.m. to ensure our home was safe and secure.

We had wanted to put the project off, but God had other plans—and as we’ve learned time and again, His plans are always greater than ours. We’ve been down this road before, where our own intentions were redirected, only to realize later that we were being led exactly where we needed to be. We thought we were just putting on new shingles; it turns out, we were being protected from hidden damage. We tried to hold on, but God said, “I’ve got this,” and He certainly did.
