There is a unique kind of noise that comes with home renovation—the sound of the old being cleared away to make room for the new. While the house was shaking this morning, I couldn’t help but see a beautiful parallel to the seasons of our own lives. I hope this reflection brings a little extra peace to your day.
It started at 5:00 a.m. with the scent of fresh bread—a new loaf of sourdough and a loaf of yeast bread for the week—wafting through the kitchen, paired with the rich aroma of coffee brewing. As I moved through my morning routine, the house began to shake—the roofers had arrived.
For most of the morning, I’ve listened to the rhythmic thumping of boots above me and the jarring sound of old shingles being ripped away. It’s loud. It’s disruptive. It feels, for a moment, like everything is being undone.
Earlier this morning, I had sat quietly and asked God for a story—a way to see something meaningful in the everyday. As I listened to the house being stripped bare above me, I realized the answer was right over my head.
Our lives are so much like this roof.
We go through seasons where it feels like everything is being torn off. The comfort of the familiar is stripped away, and it’s loud, and it’s messy, and it’s unsettling. In those moments, it is so easy to forget that this isn’t an end—it’s a prerequisite for the new.
God is the master contractor of our souls. He doesn’t just patch the holes; He prepares us for the storms to come by replacing what has worn thin. We may not always feel His presence while the debris is falling, but we can trust the process. When the dust settles and we look up, we find that we aren’t just “fixed.” We are stronger, safer, and better than we were before the first hammer fell.
Today, I’m grateful for the shelter above my head and the grace that continues to renovate my heart, one shingle at a time.
