Making lunch today turned into an unexpected moment of quiet worship. As I stood at the counter, knife in hand, chopping a vibrant mix of colorful vegetables, my mind drifted from the cutting board to the world at large. It hit me just how much a rich, varied salad reflects the beautiful complexity of the human family around us.

Fruits and vegetables are stunningly diverse. They come in an incredible array of shapes, deep colors, and unique textures. If we are being completely honest, most of us don’t love every single one of them—I know I certainly have my own preferences! People are exactly the same way. We all carry different personalities, backgrounds, ideas, and quirks.

Because of those differences, we aren’t naturally going to click with every single person who crosses our path. Yet, despite our personal preferences, the foundational truth remains: every individual is intentionally designed by the Creator.

In the very first book of the Bible, we are reminded of this:

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” ~Gen 1:27

We don’t have to be best friends with everyone to appreciate the divine craftsmanship behind them.

When you stop to think about it, can you imagine how incredibly boring life would be if we were all identical?
What if every person looked, thought, and reacted in the exact same way?
Or how dull would dinner be if all food tasted exactly like a plain potato?

Our Creator knew that a beautiful life requires contrast, and He is not a God of monochrome designs. He provided variety in massive, breathtaking abundance—not only in the harvest that sustains our bodies, but in the souls that enrich our lives.

The songwriter of the Old Testament captured this beautifully:

“How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.” ~Psalm 104:24

The sheer volume of differences in this world is proof of His limitless imagination.

Just like a good salad relies on the crunch of a cucumber, the sweetness of a pepper, and the brightness of a tomato to be whole, the world relies on our distinct traits to reflect the full character of God.

Our differences aren’t a flaw in the design; they are the design. We are many distinct pieces brought together on a single, massive canvas to create a picture of unity. It is exactly as the Apostle Paul wrote to the early church in the New Testament:

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.” ~1 Cor 12:12

The next time you see a splash of color on your plate or meet someone who sees the world a little differently than you do, take a moment to smile. It’s just a reminder of the abundant, beautiful variety God poured into creation.
