Spring cleaning is more than just a seasonal chore; it’s a ritual of renewal. As I move through the rooms, purging the things that no longer fit or serve a purpose, I can’t help but think about my spiritual life. We often treat our relationship with God like an old coat—we tuck Him away in a “back pocket” when life feels full, only to pull Him out and shake off the dust when we suddenly feel the chill of a need.

​In the silence of the house today, the clutter of the mind seems to clear along with the closets. This quiet is where the truth comes to light. I realize that we don’t always put God in our pocket because we mean to, but because the “dust” of daily routine and the noise of our possessions settle over us until we lose sight of what matters.
To hear His voice, we often have to clear out the excess.

​There is a beautiful, necessary emptying that happens during a purge. It reminds me of Philippians 2:7, which speaks of how Christ “emptied Himself.” When we empty our homes and our hearts of things we no longer need, we create the space for something fresh to grow. We make room for a new move of God.

​And there is such joy in the “paying it forward.” We have been so deeply blessed that holding onto “extra” feels like stopping a flow that was meant to reach others. As I look at the stacks of books ready for the daycare and the bags of clothes for a friend, I’m reminded of Hebrews 13:16: “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

​Giving these things away isn’t about bragging; it’s about acknowledging that we are just the pass-through for God’s blessings. It’s about circulating what we have so it doesn’t become stagnant. It’s about dusting off our hearts and making sure God isn’t just in our pocket, but at the very center of our home.
